Purpose of the role

ZSL Whipsnade Zoo is seeking an experienced Steam Locomotive Fireperson to join our Great Whipsnade Railway team. This is a unique opportunity to play a key role in operating one of the Zoo’s most loved attractions while helping us inspire and engage visitors.

If you are passionate about steam locomotives, enjoy working in a dynamic visitor environment, and want to be part of a truly unique heritage railway within a conservation organisation, we would love to hear from you.

We are looking for individuals with experience in firing steam locomotives and locomotive management. The role involves physically demanding tasks, so applicants should be comfortable carrying out manual work in a safety-critical environment. We value people who can collaborate effectively as part of a small, dedicated team.

This role is offered on a part-time basis, working a minimum of 6 hours per week on 7 month fixed-term contact. As our zoos are open seven days a week, your schedule will follow a rota which includes weekends and bank holidays. We aim to balance business needs with personal flexibility, so you’ll have advance notice of your shifts to help plan your time.

Interviews for this position are scheduled to take place on 19th March 2026.

 Key responsibilities:
  •  Locomotive Preparation & Disposal: Prepare and clean steam locomotives at the start of each shift and carry out disposal duties at the end of the day.
  •  Operational Coordination: Fire steam locomotives to a timetabled schedule, supporting the smooth running of the daily service in coordination with Station staff.
  •  Safety: Confidently respond to emergencies during journeys, including incidents involving distressed animals. Reporting all issues to the Steam Engineer, Station Master, or Duty Manager.

About You

  • Excellent customer service and communication skills, with confidence engaging and interacting with visitors.
  • Flexibility, including willingness to work varied hours when required.
  • Initiative and a proactive approach to service delivery, with the ability to take responsibility for day‑to‑day issues involving the locomotives
  • Completion of relevant Rule Book and Firing Examinations

This role is subject to standard pre-employment checks, including the candidate's right to work in the UK. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
